What happens when you redeem a gift card
Once you redeem an Apple gift card, the value adds to your Apple Account balance and loses its identity. There is no separate gift card wallet, no expiration date for the credit, no way to roll the leftover back onto a new card. The balance is region-locked to the storefront where it was redeemed.
Why leftovers are common
Apps, songs, in-app purchases and subscriptions are priced in whole, often round, currency units. Gift cards usually arrive in round amounts ($25, €50, etc.).
