Apple ID balance won't go to zero? Here's what to do

Stuck with a few cents on your Apple ID that nothing seems to spend? Apple won't refund or transfer the balance - but Zero Balance can zero it out with a tiny combination of small in-app purchases.

TL;DR

Apple Account balance can only be spent inside the App Store, never withdrawn or transferred. If your balance is smaller than any whole-number app price, no normal purchase will clear it. Eight precise in-app price tiers inside Zero Balance let you assemble a combination that matches almost any leftover.

Why your balance is stuck

Apple Account credit can only be spent on App Store content - apps, in-app purchases, subscriptions, music, books. It cannot be withdrawn to a bank account, refunded to a card, or transferred between Apple IDs. If what's left on your account is smaller than the price of any app or in-app purchase you'd normally buy, the balance just sits there. The most common cause is currency rounding: you topped up with a gift card, made a few small purchases, and a few cents remain that nothing in the store costs exactly.

What does NOT work

Trying to use the balance on an Apple subscription doesn't help - those are priced in whole dollars and euros. Buying any standard app overshoots by far more than the leftover itself. Apple has no "use up balance" button. Contacting support won't release the balance to cash; refunds (if approved) go back to the balance, which doesn't solve the problem. The change-country flow in Settings is locked until the balance is exactly zero, so people often discover the issue only when they try to switch storefronts.

What does work: small, granular purchases

Zero Balance offers eight in-app purchase tiers spread across small price points - small consumables and non-consumables. The matching algorithm picks the closest combination to your target. For typical leftovers of a few cents, the overage is usually one or two cents at most, shown before you confirm anything.

Step by step

1. Open Settings > Apple Account > Media & Purchases > View Account on your iPhone and read the exact balance. 2. Open Zero Balance and type that amount in. 3. Review the suggested plan - total, overage, number of confirmations. 4. Confirm each purchase the usual Apple way (Face ID, Touch ID, password). 5. Recheck Settings; if a few cents remain, repeat with the new amount.

Common follow-ups

Does this work in any country?

Yes - the price tiers are localized by App Store, so the same logic applies to USD, EUR, GBP, RUB, etc. The overage is in your local currency.

Is there ever a case where the balance can't be zeroed?

Only if your remaining balance is smaller than the smallest available tier in your storefront. In that case the plan will overshoot by a few cents - the screen shows exactly how much before you confirm.

Will I get charged real money?

No, as long as the plan total is at or below your Apple Account balance. Apple draws from balance first, only falling back to your payment method if the balance runs out.
