What can an Apple Gift Card actually buy?
More than most people realize. Apple Gift Card balance buys paid apps, in-app purchases in third-party games, subscriptions, Apple Books, Apple Music, AppleCare+, and (in supported regions) Apple hardware. Here is the full list.
TL;DR
Apple Gift Card balance (now part of unified "Apple Account balance") buys anything in the Apple ecosystem: paid apps, in-app purchases including third-party games like Roblox and Clash of Clans (because Apple processes the IAP regardless of the developer), Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, iCloud+, Apple One, Apple Books, iTunes content, AppleCare+, and Apple-branded hardware via the Apple Store iPhone app in supported regions.
The big surprise: in-app purchases in third-party games
This is the part most people miss. When you make an in-app purchase inside an iOS app - any iOS app, including Roblox, Clash of Clans, Fortnite (historical), Subway Surfers, Candy Crush, Genshin Impact, anything - Apple processes the transaction. The developer never touches your payment method.
That means your Apple Account balance is debited first for every iOS IAP. A Robux pack, a coin bundle, a season pass, a premium currency purchase - all of it can be paid from your Apple Gift Card balance.
This effectively makes an Apple Gift Card a universal iOS gaming currency, even though it is technically just Apple credit.
What still works to spend the balance
Full list (US and most major markets):
- Paid apps and games on the App Store - In-app purchases inside any iOS app (third-party games, subscriptions, content, etc.) - Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, iCloud+ - Apple One bundles (Individual, Family, Premier) - Apple Fitness+ - iTunes Store songs, albums, movies, TV shows - Apple Books and Audiobooks - AppleCare+ on any device - Apple-branded hardware via the Apple Store iPhone app (US, UK, several EU, see the dedicated guide)
The pattern: anything Apple processes the payment for is eligible. Anything paid through a non-Apple system is not.
What does not work
Things Apple Gift Card balance cannot buy:
- Android apps or Google Play purchases (separate ecosystem, separate billing) - Web purchases of those same games - buying Robux on roblox.com uses your card directly, not your Apple balance, because the transaction does not go through Apple - Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, any non-Apple PC marketplace - Amazon, eBay, retail purchases - Apple Pay at coffee shops, gas stations, anywhere physical (Apple Pay uses your linked cards, not your store credit) - Physical goods from non-Apple retailers, even if they sell Apple products - Cash withdrawals, bank transfers, or any conversion to liquid money
The "stuck cents" problem
A side effect of how Apple Gift Cards work: you almost always end up with an awkward residual amount. You redeem a $25 card, buy a subscription, buy a game, and end up with $0.47 or $1.13 sitting on the account that does not match any single purchase amount.
Apple's minimum in-app purchase price is $0.29, so residuals smaller than $0.29 cannot be cleared exactly without a card on file. For amounts above $0.29 you can usually combine smaller in-app purchases to get close.
Zero Balance is a free iOS app I built specifically for this residual case. It ships with its own consumables across eight price tiers ($0.29, $0.49, $0.79, $0.99, $1.49, $1.99, $2.49, $2.99) and an algorithm that picks the combination closest to your leftover. The plan-review screen shows the exact overage and number of confirmation prompts before any purchase is made. No Apple ID login, no ads, no tracking, no subscription.
Apple Gift Card vs App Store and iTunes Gift Card
Apple used to issue two separate types of gift card: the physical-store "Apple Gift Card" (usable on Apple hardware) and the digital "App Store and iTunes Gift Card" (usable for apps and content only). In 2020 Apple unified them into a single "Apple Gift Card" SKU and merged the redemption flow so a single redeemed code adds to one unified balance.
If you have an old, unredeemed "App Store and iTunes" card from before 2020, you can still redeem it - it goes into the same unified balance. There is no functional difference today.

Will my Apple Gift Card balance work for buying Robux on roblox.com (the website)?
No. Web purchases use your card directly, not your Apple balance. The same Robux purchase made inside the Roblox iOS app would use your Apple balance, because Apple processes that transaction.
Can I redeem an Apple Gift Card on an Android phone?
No. Apple Gift Card balance is tied to an Apple ID and only works in the Apple ecosystem.
I have $0.47 leftover. What do I do?
Combine small in-app purchases to get as close to $0 as possible. Apple's $0.29 IAP floor means you may have a few cents stuck unless you use a card on file to overshoot. Zero Balance automates the combination math.
