How to clear £0.38 or any sub-£1 iTunes balance

The UK IAP price floor

In the UK App Store the smallest in-app purchase price point is £0.29. After that the next available sub-£1 tiers are £0.39, £0.49, £0.79, £0.89, £0.99 - and then £0.50 increments going up. Apple announced this expanded pricing model in December 2022 when it added 700 new price points to the App Store. The localized UK price floor sits at £0.29.

There is no £0.09 or £0.19 tier on the UK App Store. That claim shows up a lot in older forum threads and it is incorrect.

What "clear £0.38" actually means

Two interpretations:

1) Land balance as close to £0.00 as possible: achievable, but the residual is constrained by Apple's £0.29 floor. You can buy one £0.29 IAP to bring the balance down to £0.09, and then that £0.09 is stuck because no smaller IAP exists.

2) Land balance on exactly £0.00: this is only possible by overshooting with a card on file. There is no combination of IAP-priced purchases that sums to exactly £0.38 using only the balance.

Without a card on file - get close, accept residual

Buy one £0.29 IAP from your balance. New balance: £0.09. The £0.09 cannot be spent because it is below the £0.29 IAP floor.

If you are OK with that small residual sitting on the account indefinitely (it does not expire), this is the simplest answer. If you need an exact zero - for example because you are about to change your Apple ID country - move to the next section.

With a card on file - the only path to exact zero

Buy any £0.99 song from iTunes or £0.99 paid app. Apple debits £0.38 of balance first, then charges the remaining £0.61 to your card. The balance hits exactly £0.00 to the penny.

This is the only way to land exactly. The card has to be from the UK store region; otherwise the App Store may refuse to split the payment.

What does not work

A few things people try that fail:

- Asking Apple Support to convert £0.38 to bank credit: refused. Apple Account balance is non-refundable and non-transferable under the Apple Media Services Terms. - Buying an Apple Gift Card with your balance: disabled around 2019, no longer possible. - Third-party "iTunes-to-cash" sites: scams or punitive fees of 20-30% plus a real risk of getting your code stolen. - Family Sharing to a non-organizer member: only the organizer's balance is consumed by family-member purchases, not the other way around.
