Can you buy gift cards with Apple Account balance?

Why the gift-card workflow is gone

Before 2019, the Apple Store on iPhone let you buy an Apple Gift Card (or App Store and iTunes Gift Card) using your existing Apple Account balance. Effectively this converted store credit into a transferable code.

Fraudsters used this to launder stolen accounts: compromise an Apple ID, drain the balance into gift cards inside the same account, then resell the codes for cash on grey-market resale sites. Apple closed the loop entirely - today the Apple Gift Card purchase flow no longer accepts Apple Account balance as a payment method on any storefront.

Avoid third-party "balance-to-gift-card" sites

A category of websites claim to convert your Apple Account balance into Amazon gift cards, Steam codes, PayPal credit, or cash. They are uniformly either:

- Outright scams that vanish with your gift-card code or login credentials. - Punitive middlemen taking 20-30% cuts and reselling on grey markets. - Phishing operations harvesting Apple IDs.

Apple's Terms also prohibit reselling redeemed balance. If detected, your account can be flagged or restricted. There is no honest "convert to gift card" service for Apple Account balance.

What your balance can still buy

The current list is broader than most people realize:

- Paid apps and games on the App Store - In-app purchases - including IAPs inside third-party games (Clash of Clans, Roblox, Subway Surfers gems, etc.) because Apple processes every iOS IAP regardless of who developed the app - Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, iCloud+ subscriptions - Apple One bundles (Individual, Family, Premier) - Apple Books and Audiobooks - iTunes Store songs, albums, movies, TV shows - AppleCare+ on a new or existing device - Apple-branded hardware (AirPods, accessories, even Macs and iPhones) via the Apple Store iPhone app, in supported regions: US, UK, Canada, Australia, and several EU countries

If the real goal is to zero out the balance

A common reason people search for "buy gift cards with my balance" is that they actually want to clear the balance to $0 - for example, before changing their Apple ID country, which Apple requires to be zero.

The working approach is two steps: spend the bulk of the balance on a subscription or paid app, then clear the residual cents by combining small in-app purchases. Apple's minimum IAP price is $0.29, so residuals smaller than that can't be cleared exactly without a card on file.

What about gifting the balance to a family member?

Family Sharing partially supports this. If you are the organizer of a Family Sharing group, your Apple Account balance is consumed first when any family member makes a purchase - so a parent's leftover balance can effectively pay for a child's apps, songs, or in-app purchases. It only flows in one direction (organizer to member), and only as purchases occur, not as a transfer of balance.
